How conversion works

Wareki year to Gregorian: era start year + era year − 1. Example: Showa 50 is 1926 + 50 − 1 = 1975.
With a full date, we pick the era that contains that day. On the first day of a new era, the new era is used.

Era changes and dual labels

1989 is both Showa 64 and Heisei 1; 2019 is both Heisei 31 and Reiwa 1. This tool can list both labels for the year.
Forms and timelines sometimes pick one label by context. If you are unsure, enter the full date.

With age tools

If you know a wareki birth date, convert it to Gregorian here, then open the age calculator. For a year-by-year list, use the age chart.

Frequently asked questions

Which eras are supported?

Meiji, Taisho, Showa, Heisei, and Reiwa. Before Meiji 6 Japan used a lunisolar calendar, so simple Gregorian mapping does not apply.

How do I enter gannen (year 1)?

Enter 1 as the era year (gannen = year 1).

Which era should I write in a change year?

Usually the old era before the change date and the new era from that date. For year-only text, both labels are sometimes written together.
