Early birthdays and grade
Japanese schools assign grade by legal age on 1 April. With the day-before rule, 1 January–1 April birthdays are “hayaumare” — older within the same grade.
Elementary start year follows the School Education Act: the first 1 April after reaching age 6 (the day after turning 6).
Using it on a CV
Months follow the school year: April start, March end. Replace school names with the official ones.
Gap years, grade repeats, and a path after high school (university, junior college, kosen, vocational) shift the years accordingly.
Frequently asked questions
What is hayaumare?
Usually a birthday from 1 January through 1 April — earlier in the year than classmates in the same grade.
How is kosen handled?
If you choose kosen, we treat a five-year programme starting after junior high.
